The role of a boss is not control?

The role of a boss is not control?

BossI recently read an article in the New York Times about the co-CEO of Birchbox.  And I wanted to share my thoughts on it with you.

Many leaders focus on the activity of “doing” and don’t delegate well.  No I am not talking about the leader that can not or will not delegate, I am talking about something else.

To quote part of the article:  “The role of a boss is to help people to take control of their lives, says Katia Beauchamp, co-founder and co-CEO of Birchbox. You can’t take personal responsibility for each of your charges; all you can do is give people the opportunity to help themselves, Beauchamp explains. “I’m here to set you up for success. But you’re driving. I can’t drive all your cars. There are too many of you,” she says.”

I agree that the CEO and Bosses and Up-lines should focus on providing the vision of the “big picture” then providing the tools and the opportunity for workers to help themselves.  Most workers, whether in a “job” or starting their own business online, want to succeed.  They will strive for that successful match to the “big picture” if given the right tools and the opportunity to use them creatively.

That is the great thing about SFM:  We are shown the “big picture” right up front and provided systematic education and tools so we can make it happen.  Many other online companies just provide the outline of information with some referrals to some tools.  SFM goes beyond that and has a whole system of education for the beginner to progress to expert.  Just like the elementary education progresses to a full blown University of information.

The question is now up to you.  Are you ready to take responsibility for your life, your success?  If you answered yes then you are ready for the training and support provided.  We offer a bit of this information and training for free – to show you a bit of what is ahead for those who truly want to take charge of their lives.  Step up and look for yourself.

Here is the complete article about Karina Beauchamp of Birchbox – she is an inspiration

creativity butterfly from apple imagesGood leaders inspire creativity. Creative thinking and the risk taking that it entails can mean great success in the future. Try branching out and exploring where your curiosity takes you. Don’t shy away from new ideas just because you can’t figure out how to make them work in the present. You can allow other people to work on their ideas if it fits in your business’s context.

Great leaders are transparent about issues that arise in the company. Although in the past it was common practice to hide business problems, in today’s workforce the best leaders talk about business problems with their team. What’s the reason? Today’s world is highly communicative. No matter what you do, the truth always prevails. You need to be in control of the message you communicate instead of simply reacting to it. This is the path that any good leader would follow.

It is important to refrain from doing anything that could be construed as deceitful or devious. It is important to keep your promises if you want to be trusted as a leader. If your claim is to be the best in your industry, be sure that your employees know how to deliver the best service.

rewards indexOffer incentives to people that do their jobs well. Yes, everyone has a salary for doing their jobs, but incentives are a big peace of the leadership puzzle. If your employee goes way above their call of duty, make sure they see that you see that and try encouraging that with a type of gift or bonus. Good leaders do not penny-pinch here.

Take ownership of failures. Even excellent leaders make mistakes. Great leaders take ownership of errors and openly communicate them to their team. It will show them that you are human, just as they are. This may not seem to show leadership, but it can result in the loyalty of your employees.

Your team is going to judge you by your actions. The team member you assign to certain projects, and other decisions you make regarding hiring and firing affects the way your team members think of you. You’ll want to avoid favoritism and reward those tho have done a good job.

leadership jigsawYou can be a great leader or a manager if you take a little time every day to look at how everything is doing in your workplace. Use some people from your team to help you discuss what’s happening. They can offer suggestions and you can discuss everything.

Stick to your word. Leadership starts with being accountable for your words and actions. What you say and do will reflect upon your business as a whole. If you have done or said things you ought not have, you must fix it. You are the team leader, so everything is ultimately your responsibility.

Your gut should often be your guide. Leaders are made quite often because they have exceptional instincts, so don’t overlook them. You’re going to make some mistakes, sometimes. Acknowledge any mistakes that you make, and ensure that you don’t repeat them in the future. Keep your mistakes in mind so you know what to avoid.

To be a good leader, it’s important that you don’t participate in favoritism. Be sure you’re always open-minded and willing to listen to your team. It is important to treat others the way you would like to be treated. Fairness to everyone, and taking care of obligations to employees should be what you strive for.
