                                    Happy Fourth of July! and The Price of Freedom!

4th of July

The 4th of July is a day of picnics, barbecues, campfires, friends and family together.

But it should also be a day of remembering and gratitude to those brave Patriots who fought to establish this great country.  It is also a day to give thanks for the intelligence and foresight by the Statesmen who were the Founding Fathers of our Constitution.

These men looked at what they saw going on in Europe and the history of other Governments to try to determine the good points, and avoid the bad points.  They felt that the tyrannical governments and the huge and all powerful, but out of touch kingdoms were not the good qualities for growth of a country.  They did their best to design a government that would be restricted from the abuse of power which hinders the creative mind and restricts the soul.  The end result was the Constitution which established a Government Of the People and By the People for the People.

Under our Constitution we have become a great country that has attracted many immigrants from many diverse backgrounds who desired to become a part of America and be citizens.  This is the day we celebrate our Independence and give thanks to those Statesmen who so wisely drafted the Constitution which promotes freedom of thought and speech and creativity.

                                                           56 Men Who Signed

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?  They gave us a free and independent America. The history books never told you a lot of what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn’t just fight the British. We were British subjects at that time and we fought our own government!

Some of us take these liberties so  much for granted…We shouldn’t!!!   So, take a couple of minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It’s not much to ask for the price they paid….

*  Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary  Army, another had two sons captured.

*  Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

*  Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

*  They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they?

*  Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

*  Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

*  Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding.  His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

*  At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

*  Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

*  John Hart was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart.

*  Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.

*  Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more.

*  Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged:

“For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

You can accomplish a lot in life thanks to strong leadership skills, including launching a successful business. Truly great business leaders can take a number of forms. No one is born a great leader. It’s essential to remain ethical when you deal with customers and employees. Ethics are important when you’re a business leader. Customers are faithful to companies that are known to truly care about them. You can make sure that your employees follow the rules if you develop a company policy on ethics.

If you focus on your team, the work will get done as expected. Inspire and encourage others for best results. Instead of concentrating on just the fact you want tasks getting done, try to focus more into motivating the team to perform at their best.

Do everything you can to be approachable. Intimidation is a tactic too many leaders use today. It isn’t good, and you won’t have the respect of others. Let those that work for you know that you’re going to be there when they need something because that’s your job.

When someone does good work, provide them with rewards. Of course, they do get paid, but a small incentive can go a long way. When employees exceed expectations, make sure you offer praise and a reward. Good leaders do not penny-pinch here.

Don’t talk as much as you listen. Being a good leader is about listening. Hear what your employees have to say. Listen to what they’re griping about and praising the company for. Employees can have great suggestions for many things, helping move the team forward. There’s a lot you can learn from listening.

Synergy is something to always keep in mind. Understand what you want to achieve in life. Also know exactly what the goals of your business are. There should always be alignment between them and overlap from time to time. It is always wise to strive to attain both simultaneously. If you aren’t able to, it will show.

Know your strengths and your weaknesses to become a great leader. If you think you have it all together, you could receive a rude awakening. Make sure you’re bringing up your weak areas.

Own your words. A leader has to be accountable. You are the heart of the company, and what you do and say reflects on the entire business. When you make mistakes, own up to them. It is not up to others to solve these issues.

One of the most effective and challenging skills you can develop as a leader in business is that of listening to your subordinates. They can take your goals and ideas and take them in new directions that you would not have conceived yourself. After they get an understanding of your vision, let them tell you what they heard and how they think improvements can be made.

Work on your writing skills. Leadership isn’t all face to face. Learn how to present yourself as a leader with the way you write. Writing with bad grammar and spelling errors will make it difficult for others to look at you as a strong leader. Keep this in mind any time that you need to write something.

Be a role model for employees. You title does not make you inherently right. If you expect employees to be punctual, then you need to be punctual too. Do not allow yourself to be a hypocrite. To be an effective leader, your employees must respect you.

Leaders don’t work alone. Work together with your team for the greater good. As you lead, bring everyone together to share ideas and make decisions. This will allow you to successfully lead your business.

Knowing your team’s weak spots is also important to leading effectively. Understanding your team’s diversity can help you find success. Learn about your employees’ personalities and behaviors. To build trust, it also helps to inquire about their family and personal life.

It isn’t easy to be a good leader, as the skill set can be quite demanding. However, these skills can indeed be taught, learned and mastered. If you would like to be one some time in the future, the tips above will help you reach that goal.
